PCI Express to Serial ATA RAID (SATA/eSATA 6Gb/s) 2/2 Port Host Adapter

Utilizing a high performance x2 PCIe 2.0 connection, the A-331 host adapter is designed for demanding professional end users with throughput of 500MB/s per direction. Providing four 6Gb/s channels, the A-331’s versatility allows configuration as JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1 or RAID 10. Moreover, the A-331 uses a Marvell 88SE92xx SATA 6G Controller with HyperDuo, allowing deployments of lightning fast SSDs in concert with high capacity HDDs in either Safe or Capacity Modes. Benchmarks of HyperDuo configurations show 80% of SSD performance (PCMark) at 1/3 the cost. The A-331 comes with its four internal SATA 6Gbps ports enabled by default; changing jumper settings allow exchange of up to two of the internal ports to the eSATA ports on the backplane of the card. The host adapter supports the older 1.5 and 3Gbps SATA standards. BIOS level settings are available for most RAID functions, while fine tuning and volume management tasks are handled with the supplied utility software for The Windows, or third party open source software under Linux.

The Orico 2595SUS3 2.5-inch SATA enclosures tested by PC Funs

The folks at pcfuns.com ran benchmarks on the ORICO 2595 Series 2.5-inch SATA HDD/SSD external enclosures with eSATA and SuperSpeed USB 3.0 with a Kingston HyperX 3K 120 GB SSD installed.

Comparing both the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and eSATA, they found the eSATA interface to be significantly faster, but that isn’t to say the USB 3.0 numbers were entirely unimpressive. The 2595's eSATA port averaged 200 MB/s reads and 171 MB/s writes with the Solid State Drive, while the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port weighed in with 164.5 MB/s reads and 103 MB/s writes.

All in all, the stylish 2595SUS3 deployed with modern 2.5-inch devices provides excellent performance and is perfect for mobile applications at a price that anyone can appreciate.

Ars Technica reports: Asus is first to the party with a Thunderbolt 2-certified motherboard

Ars Technica reports: Asus is first to the party with a Thunderbolt 2-certified motherboardHighly regarded technology site Ars Technica reported today that Asus is first to the party with a Thunderbolt 2-certified motherboard. The article's byline is "Other devices, including the new Mac Pro, will follow." Synchrotech finds this news of Thunderbolt 2 being immediately available exciting, as well as the article's announcement that USB 3.1 devices should be available in the next six months or so. Seeing both of these technologies add capabilities and increase their capacities for speed is exciting news for consumers.

Synchrotech offers several high-performance Thunderbolt devices, and intends to expand our product line up over the next few months. Thunderbolt 2's doubling of bandwidth and accommodation of single-cable 4K video represents a breakthrough for mobile users in that Thunderbolt is the only technology that allows for a single-cable connection to high end video card breakout boxes plugging into multiple 4K displays. Thunderbolt equipped notebooks are not constrained by their built in video, and Thunderbolt 2 expands upon that capability. Connecting powerful RAID and SSD to systems via Thunderbolt enables performance once only achievable by Fibre Channel and other exotic server related technologies. Current Synchrotech Thunderbolt offerings include the Delock 61971 Thunderbolt to SATA 6Gbps HDD/SSD Drive Adaptor + AC Adapter, the Sonnet Echo Thunderbolt to ExpressCard/34 Adapter Pro, and several other devices.

Correct A-331/A-341 PCIe to SATA Jumper Settings

PCI Express to Serial ATA (eSATA II/300)Surprisingly, the instruction booklet that accompanies the A-331/A-341 PCIe to SATA devices causes some confusion among a very small segment of end users in terms of jumper settings for SATA port selection.

Here is the text and images from the booklet:

Note: There are four SATA ports in PCIe SATA II 300 2-Channel RAID Card. We named these ports A to D. Ports A & B are external SATA ports and C & D are internal SATA ports. By changing the jumper setting on Encore SATA2 RAID PCIe Card that allows you to select between external and internal ports to use. By default, Port C and D are working.

Reading the instructions, a few things stand out. First off, the instructions state that Ports C and D are the default settings, and hence the internal SATA ports are the out of the box configuration. To change a port, the entire bank grouping must be relocated (this is where most people are confused), in other words all jumpers from either bank (groups of four J1-J4, or J5-J8) need be in the same position (ie. all 1-2 OR all 2-3).

To simplify this by providing the most obvious example. To switch from the default settings of both internal ports to both the external ports, one would move all the jumpers to position 1-2 closed. In other words, move every jumper to the opposite position they are already set at!

Remember, A and C are mutually exclusive, as are B and D. Hence, a mixed one internal port and one external port configuration can only consist of A and D, OR B and C.
